Design a Functional and Fabulous Bathroom

Most homeowners reach a point where they decide to perform a few upgrades to their properties, especially if they have lived in them for more than a few years. One of the areas of a home that will always benefit tremendously from an upgrade is your bathroom. Here are a few hints and tips that will help make your bathroom look fabulous, while still being functional.

Hang a Gorgeous Mirror

Far too many property owners settle for the first mirror they can find at their local hardware store. However, choosing a unique mirror and separate medicine cabinet will not only allow you to add flair to the smallest room in the house; it will give the illusion of there being a lot of additional space as well. These days, several home décor stores carry a wide range of unusual mirrors.

Dedicate Space for Everything

Your bathroom will quickly look cluttered if there isn’t anywhere to hang robes and towels. Start by hanging a small hand towel ring by the bathroom sink, install a hook on the back of the bathroom door to hang robes on and ensure that there are sufficient rails for each family member to hang their towels after use. This will keep your bathroom looking tidy, while also allowing towels to dry between uses.

Ventilation is Crucial

An aspect that is often overlooked when re-designing a bathroom is ventilation, and while homeowners think that installing a single opening window will suffice; this is usually not the case.

During your redesign process, it’s essential to make allowance for a good-sized extractor fan to be installed, along with at least one opening window. When searching for an extractor, it’s important to not choose the cheapest unit possible. Cheap units are often noisier than they are effective, and they usually also don’t last long either.

After everyone has bathed or showered at night or in the morning, it’s a good idea to leave the windows open and the extractor running for approximately 30 – 45 minutes, as this will prevent a build-up of moisture in the bathroom.

Good Lighting is Essential

When redesigning your bathroom, it’s important to ensure that the lighting is not only going to be sufficient; it also needs to be installed in the correct places to prevent shadows from being thrown on to work surfaces and directly in front of mirrors.

New generation LED lighting provides an excellent quality of light, while also helping to reduce your energy costs. Before having any light fixtures installed in a bathroom, it’s crucial to ensure that they have been designed to withstand being exposed to the levels of moisture that are experienced in this part of a home.
